Who We Are

Public Health Acupuncture of New Mexico is a 501c3 non-profit dedicated to making acupuncture accessible in New Mexico.

Our activities include ear acupuncture for addictions (acudetox) programs, acudetox trainings, continuing education in public health topics for acupuncturists, a NM medical reserve corps and program evaluation.

Mission Statement

The mission of Public Health Acupuncture of New Mexico is to promote the use of acupuncture to improve the health of people, to reduce health disparities, and to develop a public health acupuncture and acutherapy practitioner workforce for New Mexico.

We achieve this by:

  • Promoting the use of acupuncture and acutherapy for public health applications

  • Providing support in starting up acupuncture and acutherapy programs for addictions and post-disaster.

  • Training practitioners

  • Evaluating programs and communicating outcome results

  • Responding to man-made and natural disasters by volunteers of the NM Integrative Wellness Medical Reserve Corps.

Primary Activities

Acudetox (ear acupuncture for addictions) programs

  • Provide acudetox (ear needles) and acutherapy (ear acupressure seeds) treatments to people affected by substance use and addiction.

  • Provide technical support to substance user treatment, prevention and harm reduction programs to develop acudetox and other acupuncture programs.

  • Provide acupuncture supplies, insurance, and supervision (as required by law) on a case-by-case basis for acudetox programs and specialists.

  • Evaluate acudetox and other programs and communicate their effectiveness to the public.

  • Advocate for acudetox programs and clients.

Education Programs

  • Train acudetox (ear acupuncture for addictions) specialists.

  • Training acupuncturists in public health acupuncture skills.

  • Trainings in Acutherapy (ear acupressure seeds)

PHANM hosts the NM Integrative Wellness Medical Reserve Corps

The NM Integrative Wellness MRC is a group of volunteer acupuncturists, behavioral therapists, dog therapists and other healthcare professionals such as Acudetox Specialists, EMTs, Chiropractors and nurses, coming together to provide integrative therapy to people in crisis. Our team members are all cross-trained in Psychological First Aid and Acutherapy.

We are part of the larger NM Medical Reserve Corps which manages and mobilizes volunteers to help communities respond to various events including, mass casualty incidents, emergency medical response, man-made and natural disaster, such as fires, shelter operations, critical incidents and various Health Initiatives from the US Surgeon General’s Office.
